Tracking Failure

No matter how good you are, some transactions will fail.

Plan on it.

And track it when it happens.

Then either report on it or alert on it depending on the type of failure.

The best integration expect that things will not always go as planned.  When you are dealing with supply chain or e-commerce integrations this should be even more so.  To help, here are some basic tracking strategies to help:

  • Confirm completion of transaction or transmission.
  • Monitor known points of failure.
  • Whenever possible, leave breadcrumbs.
  • Pull tracking data to a central repository so that it can be analyzed.

Keeping on top of what is happening includes more than just being alerted to a problem, but having data that helps you understand and locate the source of the problem as well.
